  • 10 June 1997 onwards Minister of State for Labour (independent charge), with additional charge of Urban Affairs, till dissolution of Parliament on 19th March 1998

Accomplishments:

  • Influenced the decision on the twinning of the Mangalore-Shoranur railway track by bringing pressure on the Central Government.
  • Fully utilized the amount of Rs.2 crore allotted to MPs in 1996-’97 and 1997-’98.
  • Took steps for disbursing Provident Fund as soon as an employee retires from service.
  • Secured an allocation of Rs.25 crore to Calicut bye-pass.
  • Took steps to improve conditions in Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) hospitals. Instituted facilities for surgical treatment including bye-pass surgery at the best hospitals in India, full cost being met by the ESI.
  • Took steps to establish modern ESI hospitals at Kozhikode and Kollam
  • Instituted Provident Fund Office at Kannur.
  • Played a decisive role in securing Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to Kozhikode.
